Three Quick & Easy Creative Ideas to Help Clear a Foggy Head

September 05, 20263 min read

Some days, our thoughts feel clear and organised. On other days, everything seems complicated, pushing uphill and foggy.

A foggy head can appear when we are tired, overwhelmed, a little rundown or trying to do too many things at the same time. Difficulty concentrating and decision paralysis – where to start….

Sometimes, pushing through isn’t always the answer.

Here are three simple creative ideas to help distract and re-set your brain and help bring you back to centre….

You don’t need to be an artist, or to produce a masterpiece or complete a complicated assignment – these ideas are about enjoying the process, just to be in the moment.

1. Doodle Without a Plan

Take a pen and a blank piece of paper. Begin with a dot, a wavy line or a simple shape, then let your hand move wherever it wants to go.

You could fill the page with:

  • Spirals and circles

  • Leaves and flowers

  • Clouds and stars

  • Repeating patterns

  • Completely meaningless squiggles

Doodling gives your mind a break from making decisions. The gentle, repetitive movement can help slow racing thoughts and bring your attention back to the present moment.

Set a timer for five minutes and give yourself permission to create something that has no purpose at all.

2. Make a Tiny Pocket of Calm

Cut a small piece of card (say credit card sized) and decorate it with something that feels peaceful to you. You might paint a tiny moonlit sky, draw a tree, add a pressed flower, a lovely piece of soft fabric you were going to throw away or create a soothing pattern.

On the back, write one gentle sentence you need to hear today. For example:

  • “Let it be”

  • “I don’t have to solve everything today.”

  • “This too shall pass.”

  • “Today I am going to go gently”

Keep your little card in your purse, beside your bed or near your workspace. Whenever your thoughts become cloudy, hold it, look at the image and slowly read the words to yourself.

Think of it as a small piece of calm that you can carry with you.

3. Try a Five-Minute Mindful Make

Choose one small creative activity and give it your full attention for five minutes.

You could:

  • Slowly colour a simple pattern

  • Fold a piece of paper into a heart

  • Arrange buttons or beads by colour

  • Shape a small object from clay

  • Make a miniature nature picture from leaves

  • Add a few stitches to a piece of fabric

As you create, notice the colours, textures and movements. If your thoughts wander back to your worries, gently return your attention to what your hands are doing.

You do not have to finish anything. The aim is simply to step away from the noise for a few minutes and reconnect with your senses.

Creativity Without Pressure

Creativity doesn’t always mean making an impressive piece of art. It can be a quiet pause, a playful experiment or a way of expressing feelings that don’t yet have words.

On foggy days, choose the idea that feels the easiest—don’t over think it , go with the one that pops into your head first. Use whatever materials you already have and stop whenever you are ready.

Your mind may not become perfectly clear, but you might create a little more breathing space inside it. Sometimes, that small pocket of space is enough to help us see the next step.

A Sunshine Reflection

What colours, textures or creative makes help you feel most like yourself?

Choose one creative idea and spend just five gentle minutes with it today.

Remember that persistent or worsening brain fog can sometimes have a medical cause. If it is affecting your daily life or comes with other concerning symptoms, speaking to a healthcare professional.
